    Posted: May/24/2010 at 3:05am
Hey all,

I'll do my best to be concise. I'm hoping to make Battle for the Citadel my first Battlefront game. I've played a handful of scenarios before (several years ago, mostly BlackCat games). I'm bringing several people along and I'm more or less in charge of planning the whole thing. I'm really obsessive and thorough (Freud would call me anal, but I would call him dead) so I'm trying to get all the information I can early so that I can start organizing things now.

I'm probably going to keep adding questions to this thread as they come up so I'm not clogging the forum every time I have something new. In that case, I'll try to keep the OP updated so anyone else with questions can just look and see what's been answered. I apologize in advance for any questions that have been asked and answered elsewhere already. With this many questions, my search-fu is weak.

ANSWERED QUESTIONS (Thank you!)

Facility Questions
  1. What kind of food/drink options are available at the field? Burgers, dogs, chips, pulled pork, sloppy joes. Vending machines for beverages.
  2. What is the lavatory situation (plumbing, portajohns, trees)? Plumbing (the Mrs. thanks you).
  3. Will camping be permitted/encouraged on Friday night before the game for out-of-towners? Yes
  4. If (3), what's the proximity of the camping area to the parking and play areas? Close to both.
  5. If (3), are attendees allowed to have campfires or use portable cooking equipment (camp-stoves and the like)? Yes.
  6. If (3), is alcohol allowed on the premesis? [For responsible adults of legal age to consume in moderation around the campfire mentioned in (5)] Pending official answer; unofficially looks to be okay.
  7. If not (3), are there any hotels/motels nearby that you would recommend? Psh! Who cares if there's camping? But, yes.

Event Questions
  1. How long will this event be? 10-5
  2. Will there be a night game component on Friday? [I expect that this might have something to do with the *not D-Day* June event's night game.] Not planned, but not ruled out.
  3. Will there be roles (other than command) for this game? Yup, details pending.
  4. What are the rules for RoF, firing modes, triggers, etc.? Anarchy, so long as you're shooting FPO under the speed limit of 290fps.

Scenario Questions
  1. Beyond the urban areas, what is the terrain of the field like? Are there mostly open areas and established paths, or is it more dense, untamed foliage? Is the topography pretty much flat, or more varied? A smorgasbord of everything Ohio has to offer.
  2. Can anyone suggest some reliable, effective, and reasonably-priced radios? My old set of Cobras got sacrificed to the moving gods some time in the last few years. Motorola Walkabouts; Midland LXT326;
  3. Are the respawns suitably efficient and the respawn areas close enough that reloading paint is pretty painless, or is it wise to hire a sherpa to carry a few cases onto the field? Good placement of respawn/staging, but plan to carry paint.
  4. Do generals tend to be receptive to teams/groups eager to take on missions all day, or do things tend to get delegated to "regulars"? [I've seen scenarios in which the field-familiar teams are given most of the scenario work and everyone else is regarded as a pawn. Conversely, had one in which a friend and I were a 2-man points-reaping machine for 24 hours because the general was stoked to have people more into playing the scenario than racking up kills.] Generals <3 players who <3 missions.

Other Questions
  1. Are there typically a significant number of female players at your events? [My better half asked, as she's planning to come along.] Growing in number.
  2. Will Charlie be in the trees? Paintball players in the trees: probably not. Actual Charlie in the trees: time will tell. Charlie is a sneaky little bastard.
  3. Is it okay to bring a team, but not talk a bunch of trash on the forums for the months prior to the event about how awesome our team is? [I'm a very honest person and, frankly, we're not all that good.] Not required, but encouraged. Editor's note: Good, cause I'd hate to spend months getting to know you all online just to have you all cancel your preregistrations when you realize that you have no chance of winning against the wall of awesome that we're bringing.
  4. Are there regular photographers at the field? I'd like to try and get some shots of my people during the game. To that end, I'd like to be able to contact said photographers and compensate them for their services. No sanctioned photography.

Thanks in advance for everyone's time and help. Really looking forward to coming out of scenario retirement.

Ok, Questions are always good, so here we go.....

1. For drinks there are vending machines, Gatorade, Pop ad bottled water. Prices range from 50cents to 1.50. Food  on scenario days is good, burgers, hotdogs and ussually something special like pulled pork sandwhiches or sloppy joes plus chips.

2.  2 Full Bathrooms

3. Camping is definetly permitted
     A. Camping area is extremely close.
     B.  Fires are permitted, bricks are available  to make rings, Camping equipment is allowed.
     C. I cannot officially answer this question...it has been known to happen.
     D. There are several hotels within 5 miles of the field, including a Holiday Inn.

4. Citidel will go from 10am-5pm
5. As of now there is no night game, but that could change
6. Roles have not been decided yet.
7. You bring it, you can shoot it. we have no ROF limit. Only solid rules  concerning markers are Field Pant Only and FPS is below 290.

8. The field has pretty much everything, open fields, dense woods, a river and a swamp. It's certainly not flat, yet it's not extreme hills either. There are plenty of established paths and untamed woods.

9. Motorola Walkabouts are pretty much the standard.
10. Not sure where the spawns will be for this one, ussually they are pretty effecient. It's a big field but unless your in the extreme back corners it's never a bad walk to get more paint.

11. Most generals are happy to give missions to the eager ones. There are several regular teams on the field but we are all happy to help out with missions or give them to whoever wants them. Thats the great thing about this field, all the regulars are good people, we've driven out the riff raff lol.

12. Lately we have been seeing more female players, it varies from game to game.
13. If you mean will players be in the trees...it's not outlawed, but it isn't a regular thing either. If you mean actual vietcong.....stranger things have happened at this field lol.

14. Trash Talking is not a requirement to play at the field, it's just encouraged lol.
15. 1st Strike games ussually have a professional photographer on hand, however Citadel being a non 1st Strike game there wont be. However there are always some of us regulars taking pictures and all those are made available here on the forums.
14.

Facility Questions
  1. What kind of food/drink options are available at the field?  Burgers, dogs, pulled pork, chips.
  2. What is the lavatory situation (plumbing, portajohns, trees)?  Plumbing.  There are two small restrooms located in the snack shack.
  3. Will camping be permitted/encouraged on Friday night before the game for out-of-towners?  Yes, camping is free and there is usually a few people there.  You will probably see where to setup when you arrive, but it is across from the admin building.
  4. If (3), what's the proximity of the camping area to the parking and play areas?  Right next to both.  Some people set up canopies in either the parking lot/camping area and use them all day when they exit the field.
  5. If (3), are attendees allowed to have campfires or use portable cooking equipment (camp-stoves and the like)?  Yes.
  6. If (3), is alcohol allowed on the premesis? [For responsible adults of legal age to consume in moderation around the campfire mentioned in (5)]  Yes, as long as you allow any Immortals to sample your beverages.  Smile  Actually I won't be able to make this game.
  7. If not (3), are there any hotels/motels nearby that you would recommend?  I don't know this one but camping is allowed.

Event Questions
  1. How long will this event be?  Saturday 9-5.  (Always check will fiield owner day of event.  Actual game start time may be 10-1030).
  2. Will there be a night game component on Friday? [I expect that this might have something to do with the *not D-Day* June event's night game.]  I have not heard of any night game for this event.
  3. Will there be roles (other than command) for this game?  Typically there are special roles, either handed out by the command or randomly day of event.
  4. What are the rules for RoF, firing modes, triggers, etc.?  Bring whatever you own.  Special launchers (LAWs, etc.) need to be approved before use.  Full auto markers are allowed, just keep that in mind if you get hit multiple times.  Most people aren't out there to light anyone up, but it does occasionally happen.

Scenario Questions
  1. Beyond the urban areas, what is the terrain of the field like? Are there mostly open areas and established paths, or is it more dense, untamed foliage? Is the topography pretty much flat, or more varied?  Varied.  There are hills, open areas, creeks, trees, brush, bunkers, bridges.  There are paths throughout and while they make travel easier, they are more prone to ambushes.
  2. Can anyone suggest some reliable, effective, and reasonably-priced radios? My old set of Cobras got sacrificed to the moving gods some time in the last few years.  I use Midland LXT326.  $50 for 2 pack at Walmart.  No problems with them yet, (other than being lost).
  3. Are the respawns suitably efficient and the respawn areas close enough that reloading paint is pretty painless, or is it wise to hire a sherpa to carry a few cases onto the field?  You would be wise to have a vest or harness to carry ammo with you.  The walk back to the parking lot can take some time depending on where your respawn is.  I usually visit the lot 3 or 4 times (aside from lunch break) during the day.  Respawns vary from rolling respawn to 10-15 minutes respawns.  That may be announced on the forum thread or could be day of.
  4. Do generals tend to be receptive to teams/groups eager to take on missions all day, or do things tend to get delegated to "regulars"? [I've seen scenarios in which the field-familiar teams are given most of the scenario work and everyone else is regarded as a pawn. Conversely, had one in which a friend and I were a 2-man points-reaping machine for 24 hours because the general was stoked to have people more into playing the scenario than racking up kills.]  When the generals actually get players who do more than check in at the respawn or give blank stares when being informed of missions they are thrilled.

Other Questions
  1. Are there typically a significant number of female players at your events? [My better half asked, as she's planning to come along.]   I have noticed the number of females players increasing at BF.  I am sure there will be some there, but how many I dunno.
  2. Will Charlie be in the trees?  Doubtful, but I have seen crazier!
  3. Is it okay to bring a team, but not talk a bunch of trash on the forums for the months prior to the event about how awesome our team is? [I'm a very honest person and, frankly, we're not all that good.]  Ha!  No, trash talking is encouraged.  J/K there are plenty of teams that come to BF that don't even look at the forums.  Most of us have played together for a while and it is all in good fun.
  4. Are there regular photographers at the field? I'd like to try and get some shots of my people during the game. To that end, I'd like to be able to contact said photographers and compensate them for their services.  I don't know if the god-like-creature (Hammer) will be attending or not.  I think he usually does First Strike games.  There are typically a few amateurs floating around out there with cameras/video cams.

Thanks in advance for everyone's time and help. Really looking forward to coming out of scenario retirement.  Hope you make is out and have a great time.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Kratos.

I'm bringing at least a handful of teammates who were raised on tourny-style paintball and small outdoor fields. They've never seen anything like this. For the most part everyone has their own equipment already. The wife, on the other hand, is brand new to the sport (unless you count the years of putting up with me and my obsession). Starting to put together some kit for her. Going to try and get her out to some rec games before then so she's not going in cold.

We're more than likely going to be operating as a team for the day. Luckily, I've played and reffed with most of these guys for between 4 and 10 years, so we've got communication pretty much down. Everyone seems to be most excited about the role-play/mission aspect of the game (which isn't surprising, as they've all played short, elimination/ctf games for the entirety of their paintball experience).

I'd absolutely love to. *Not D-Day* just didn't work with my schedule. My better half just graduated from college last weekend and isn't working yet, so not only do I not have extra money for an out-of-state event, but I'm working every shift I can (that means every weekend).

Waiting until August gives us time for her to get her feet on the ground professionally, plus time for my less-gainfully-employed teammates to save up some cash. More importantly, it gives me time (and money) to get the little lady outfitted in some decent gear so she's comfortable and has a good experience.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Crack. I've been skulking around the boards here for a few days getting a feel for the place, and I'm really impressed by the overall attitude and positive energy.

I've been playing paintball since '94 and have played pretty much all of the formats paintball has to offer. Looking back, the best time I ever had playing was the War In The Woods Stalingrad game several years back. I semi-retired when my daughter was born because I'm in school full-time, working full-time, my fiancee was in school full-time, and I had a mini-me to chase around. Time and money were just not available.

Skip ahead: about three months back my fiancee spontaneously remarked, "I can't wait til I graduate and get a good nursing job. Then you can stop working all the time and you'll be able to play paintball whenever you want."

It's no wonder I'm marrying this woman.

So, I reflect on my decade and a half in this sport and realize that I'm pretty much over tournament play, tournament formats, and tournament attitudes. I just want to go out and have a good time. That brought me back to Stalingrad and I'm pretty sure I'm a scenario baller moving forward. BF looks like a hell of a place to get back into it.

Welcome to the Forums.  Looking forward to playing along side you, or shooting at you in the near future LOL.

You have definitely found the right place.  With the exception of the occasional hot heads here & there, most of us at Battlefront are there to have a good time.  Regardless of all the trash-talk on the forums & on the field (mostly for fun)... winning the game is one thing, but having a good time shooting at friends is really what it's all about.

No worries bringing the little lady either, there are always new players at the Front.  Some young, some old, some guys, some girls.  Doesn't matter, as long as they have a good attitude they'll have a good time.
