Came down with a nice rash of poison sumac after this one, hit me like a ton of bricks while I was out of town this past week, and landed me in the hospital for a nice dosage of prednisone once I got home. I don't know how you people that play with short sleeves and no shirts get by.

I got lucky on that one, I don't seem to get anything like that (Ivy, ect).  I don't even know how to spot the stuff.  But, a good tip one my old team mates who gets it very bad told me works for him:  Take a shower with dish detergent asap after contact or possible contact.  Apparently the poison ivy is oil based, and the dish detergent breaks the oil up.  Last I heard he hasn't got it since he has been using that trick!  Don't know if it works with Sumac, but probably worth a try.

I got this stuff at CVS that you put on before you go in the woods. You apply it like sun screen and it puts a film over your skin which helps keep the oils off. I usually get poison ivy very bad, but I have not gotten it since I started using this stuff.

I have no idea how to spot the stuff either... even if I did, who has time to stop & look at a bush you are about to dive into because there is a tank around the corner 8' in front of you?

I get poison very easily so I bought an ivy wash last Summer.  I use it sometimes at lunch depending on how much time I spent in the woods that morning, but definitely after the day is over before I leave the field or in the shower at home (sometimes both because I may get more of the oil on me after putting my stuff in the wash).  I did get poison once this past June but only because I couldn't find the wash to use it.

I've been considering the Ivy Block product but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.  I'll do that next year.  Good to hear you've had success w/ it so far.

GER, good point on the handling or clothes.
When I was 16, my right hand swelled up and blister in January, with a foot of snow on the ground that had been there for weeks. I went to the dermatologists. He took one look at my hand and said,
"Been hunting?"
 I said, "ah yea?"
He said, Skinned that rabbit didn't you?"
I said, "Yea?"
He said, "Poison ivy."
"Really?"
"Yep, the oil from the vine will get on their fur and you can still get it if you touch the fur."

Moral of the story, you CAN get it anytime of the year, merely by handling your clothes that have been in contact with the vine or leaves. Just an FYI

Absolutely, the urushiol oil can last basically forever on your clothes, vest, etc... leave that stuff alone for a couple years without washing it & you could still get a rash.

I could post about poison ivy after every game, this time just happen to be poison sumac which was a first for me. I was doing everything wrong to treat it like I treat poison ivy. I could have filled up an 8 oz cup every hour with the sap coming out of my arms. Doc recommended not putting anything on it and sitting around naked as much as possible and that heat was my enemy cold was my friend.

Well the first half of the day I was bustin my hump, after lunch I started to feel the wear and tear. I thought I needed to cool off a bit so I took it a little easier. I didnt put my jersey back on and just went out with t-shirt. I thought how about I just dont jump into the weeds like I had been all morning. I never put any thought in the fact that my pants and gun and gloves were probably covered already. Oh well every once in a while I need a good reminder as to why I don't play paintball without long sleeves.
